Siyaqhuba Asimanga! On Saturday, our playgroup brought parents to understand that anyone can book share. All it takes is time and the willingness to gain respect from children.

Our librarian, Vuyokazi Nyokana, facilitated a playgroup showing parents how to book share with their children. She started by presenting about what is book sharing, asked questions and had a discussion with parents that were present.

Parents had their turn to practice book sharing, asked questions and commented on how they saw Vuyokazi while she was role playing the book sharing. They commented and agreed that it is very interesting how book sharing and book reading is different. Parents even mentioned being uncomfortable when they first heard about book sharing, as some of them cannot read. However, their concerns were put to rest:

“Being unable to read is not a problem when it comes to book sharing," Vuyokazi advised "Book sharing is about having a conversation between you and your child about the story and the pictures. Remember this is a child’s journey so they are allowed to do whatever they want to do with the book, biting, paging the book from back to front but this opportunity is given to them to lead while you as a parent get the chance to see how they are improving."
